Volvo Repair: Volvo 245 not running right, if at all, walbro 255 fuel pump, mechanical fuel injection

Question
Hopefully you can help me out. I'll try to give details as much as possible. the car is a 1984 Volvo 245 turbo Intercooled wagon, 4-speed O.D.
Symptoms:

Driving on Sunday, was running really good, minus a small exhaust leak that just popped up a few days ago... boosting 10 psi, but not in the boost at all, I pull away at a light, and it surges hard like I had slammed the brakes, and it felt like it was trying to die. I gave more throttle, and it stumbled a whole lot, then went right back to chugging along like it was fine. Drove fine for a few minutes, and figured it was going to be okay, then it started doing it again.. Now, every time I was sitting at a light, it was fine at idle. Not even the slightest surge. As soon as the light went green, and I started pulling away, it would start bucking again, and if I gave it a lot of gas, it would stumble, then take off just fine.... I limped it back home doing this, and parked it. Next day, it wouldn't start. it will try to start up, turns over and everything, but it will just fire up for a second, then die... if I get it started for that split second,a nd try to give gas to keep it alive, it feels like it floods out, and dies...

the car has a new Walbro 255 fuel pump in tank, cap/rotor/plugs/wires have been replaced, fuel filter replaced, all in the last 5000 miles. I've never come across this with any of my other cars, so I'm confused about it...

Can anyone give me ideas at least to start hunting down the problem?

thanks in advance for any help!

Answer
Hello David,

Hmmmmm..it sorta sounds like a fuel delivery problem...the wrong volume can make it run both rich and lean...suspect items include... f/press regulator or another component related to fuel.
This car has mechanical fuel injection..unlike other 84's...you may consider...vacuum leak..ecu connector..fuses with corroded ends that LOOK good but aren't...NEVER USE ALUMUNUM FUSES..failed connections at battery feed wiring..David,you're going to have look at your electrical connections at back of engine..the wiring on some 84's had insulation problems also.
      Good luck,
