hi.... can you tell me whats wrong when there is a strong smell of gasoline in the cabin? volvo 245 stcar. 1984

Hello,

        I think you should look....on the top of the fuel tank which is accessable by doing the following...flatten the back seat..look for 2 or 4 screws on flat floor panel and take them out..pry floor panel up...the floor panel is a bit resistant..lift it up to the point of access to metal inspection plate..take screws out and pry up panel.
        Look at the metal tubing going into the Sending unit/Tank pump....their is 3 wires to it also..OFTEN they rust out..badly.
This job gets pretty intense..fumes..very close fitted parts..Dont do this job if you don't have better than average abilities.
          DO NOT put a used sending unit to repair the problem.
         Before you start this inspection...put 2 or 3 pieces of cardboard under car overnight...to isolate problem.
