Volvo Repair: 1999 Volvo S80 2.9L Catalytic Converter?, volvo s80, 1999 volvo s80

Question
I am trying to confirm a problem that I have with my car. I believe it is the catalytic converter. I was told by a family member the balls or rods(whatever is in it) may have melted together. There is this awful rattling noise that comes beneath the center of the car right below where the radio would be from the inside. I can hear the rattle at an stand still idle. It gets worse  when I am driving and let off the gas pedal when I am coasting. It is not over heating and the tempature gauge is at normal. Does this sound right to you? Does it need to be replaced or touched up some how?

Answer
Joe, your family member needs to read up on whats inside a cat converter.  There are no balls or rods inside there.  There may be a loose shield that is making that noise but one of the cats may have come apart.  Its best to put the car in the air and hit the cat with a rubber mallet to see if the insides are rattling.  Let me know what you find out.  Roger
