Volvo Repair: rad fluid, head gasket problem, rubber insulators

Question
Hello , I noticed I'm leaking rad fluid , but can't seem to locate where it's coming from , I have a '91 740 .At this moment I'm keeping my eyes on the temp gauge ,which hasn't really been moving from center and refilling the rad fluid as it seems to be emptying out regularly. I've done a quick check of the hoses and they seem fine as does the pump and there doesn't seem to be any leaks around the thermostat , all I see is rad fluid on the engine again dont see any leaks around the manifold ( mind you havent had a thourough inspection nor visited a mechanic , your help is much appreciated , thank- you .

Answer
Hello Gene,  Well if you 'seeing' it we can rule out a possible head gasket problem. If the front of the engine compartment is drier than the rear area check the heater control valve. Its at the firewall, rt.of center. The hoses may be ok,the valve itself was the problem in most cases. The bottom hose connection of the reservior bottle tended to deteriorate over time and can leak there also.As a pre-caution there is a 'fan temp switch' at the top pass.sd. of the rad. make sure the fan operates by pulling the two rubber insulators back and touch the leads together and the fan should work (key 'ON'),if its original or you don't know, replace it,and the rubber grommet too (not alot of$),use carb cleaner as your lubricate it works better than ANYTHING trust me.Thank you and good hunting!  PKD
