Volvo Repair: 1996 Volvo 850, spring clamps, center vent

Question
My 1996 Volvo 850 sedan has over 150,000 miles, but runs very well.  A couple of months ago the indicator light bulb for the driver heated seat (in the console) went out and I had it replaced at the dealership.  Last night the light bulb in the instrument cluster (that allows you to see when it is dark)went out.  The dealership says they will have to remove the dash to change the bulb, and it will cost major bucks.  Can I do this myself?

Answer
Hello Deborah,  Well, that was a feature of the 850,They are correct the dash will need to be 'lifted' at the cluster(instrament)sd.,the only dicy part is not 'lift' it too high or it will break the 'joiner' ai the rt.of the center vent.Mind you it will need to be raised as high as the cluster is thick, 10 in. or so .Now what I do is take one of those large 'spring'clamps and (with a clothe over the contact pt.s to prevent scaring) attach it to the pt. of the center rt.vent and the other half of the dash.It will help to prevent breakage during the 'lifting' process.Have ALL the bulbs replaced.Thank You and good hunting!  PKD
