Volvo Repair: Fan indicator light coming on, coolant tank, small claims court

Question
Hello.  I have a 850 Volvo, 1995 Non-turbo, automatic transmission.

My fan indicator light has been coming on, in the dash.  What does this mean?

Also, my mode arrow indicator light came on and had the car worked on.  The mode economy/sport switch was replaced, but then the arrow still came on, flashing, and it was still like my car had a severe case of the flu!  I read where you can shift quickly 21 times from "L" to "P" to knock copper bits out.  Well, I did that, the light has not come back on, but the car still drives like in a low mode.  Is it the wear rings going out on the transmission?

I was ripped of and paid over $500.00 for them not to fix my car, so I want to try myself!

Answer
Hello Marie,  First there is no actual 'fan'warning lite .You may be seeing the low coolant lite, its a picture of the radiator WITH a small fan picture. If that the case and the coolant(anti-freeze) level is good, the problem is the coolant tank itself. The float is known to fail ,over time .Somtimes just turnning it on its sd.,say when the time belt is replaced, can make it fail .Just replaced it cause it can't be repaired. As for the slow acceleration, the trans sounds like it is in Winter mode, meanning it is in 2nd gear when you take off. I've not heard the procedure you report.Down-shifting D to 3 to 2 when braking, does help keep the 'roller contacts'clean. What needs to be done is have the 'codes' checked and repaired right. The P.N.P switch is a known failure part. Its what was called the nuetral safty switch in the past.Have the dealer diaginos and repair. Then 'small claims' court may be your next option to recover any $loses.Thank you and good hunting!  PKD
