Volvo Repair: Winter mode problem, batt cables, climate weather

Question
You mentioned the problematic switch. Where is it located ? is it the PNP switch on the transmission? You mentioned clean with wd 40. Sounds like you are talking about two switches. Not sure what I clean with the wd 40 and where it is and then do I look at another switch on the trans..-------------------------

1995, 960 volvo. Winter mode would be on in the morning before car was started. Mostly if it was outside for the night. Turning the key switch on and off several times would clear it. We are in warm climate weather.. The winter mode engaged/transmission fault arrow indicator on the dash is on during this problem. Now the winter mode is on all the time and the arrow blinks on and off and the transmission will not come out of the winter mode.  Starts in the high gear. HELP

Hello John,  First thing the 'codes'should be read and checked, where they put that switch was probelmatic. Clean with an electrical spray ,WD-40 comes to mind, relieve any binding/sticking.If that does't help, the switch may be the problem. The old fashion nuetral safty switch is now the PNP switch"park/nuetral/position" switch. Its mounted on the pass.sd. of the trans. You are actualy starting off in 2nd gear, have you tried shifting manualy? They picked that gear so you wouldn't spin in mud or snow/ice.she has some age and these repairs will be 'once in her lifetime'.As a last option, have you radio code ready, disconnect the two batt. cables and touch together for 10 sec.'s.If its computer or 'lighter' electrics, this disipates all residual currents and groundings.Re-connet and check op.  .Thank you and good hunting!  PKD

Answer
Hello John,  The switch is on the center console by the shifter. Problematic because of where it is,handbag and edible,drink-ables can 'gum up the works'.Just a small amount of WD's needed, then work the switch buttons on and off.If the owners manual is handy check it out. No,its not the PNP sw.on the trans.,that another part for proper shifter/trans. operation. If that switch is in fact malfunctioning if will have stored a 'code number'.Not all independent shops buy the optional transmission software to go with thier scanner systems.Ask other volvo drivers where they suggest repairs. That model has been out there for a while and the dealer should be very efficient with the 'cure'Thank you and good hunting!  PKD
