Motorcycle Repair: Shifting gears, clutch basket, shifting gears

Question
I have a 2004 Fatboy. Monday the 08 Nov, I tried to go for a ride and the Shifter would not aloow me to shift right. I think I hve a spring that is broke. I can shift gears, but I have to put the shifter back, it has to much play. If I'm not careful I can go from 5 to 1 with 1 down stroke. What do you recommend?

Answer
You have a shifter spring that is attached to the shifter rod that is broken and needs replaced.
in order to replace it the top of the trans has to be removed. Also the primary, clutch basket, and inner primary has to be removed to access the shifter rod.
If you are planning on doing the work yourself i would suggest buying a service manual. In it you will find steps to do the work.
Good luck and happy riding
