Volvo Repair: muffler, exaust systems, soda straw

Question
How can I tell if my muffler is gone on my 1999 Volvo S70? My exhaust is a little noisy - but it passed inspection. This can't be a normal sound. I hate to spend $200 on a muffler only to find that wasn't the problem. All the pipes look good.
Any suggestions?

Hello Shelly,  There is a situation with Volvo exaust systems when they went to stainless steel.Over time some,not all got sounding a little more 'throaty' sounding,a low tone droan almost.Nothing to worry about,as long as there are no leaks all should be well.If youare hearing a 'tinny'sound that can be attributed to the 'inner welds' of the 'inner' pipes.Picture one soda straw inside of a slightly larger one and that how your pipes are made.welds that anchor them apart may crack over time.Thank You and good hunting!  PKD
