Volvo Repair: 240dl charging problem, dash lights, pully

Question
My 240 started flashing its dash warning lights between dim and
bright. revving engine up high causes them to stop and lights to
get bright again. battery went so dead that I had to jump car. Runs
fine if dash lights stay off, but when on, lights dim and car will not
start.

I have the battery on a charger but wonder is it an alternator/
regulator or just one or the other?

Thanks,
Mike

Answer
Hello Mike,  Well, when lights 'flash', any lights, its a sign of a loose connection. In this case a bad alternater ground. In the volvo case the wires that run under the large lower pully are known to get chafted and are touching the engine There is also a large grey connector at the firewall the harness becomes bare of insulator and that will cause poor charging. If the wires look ok ,have the charge system check at your local shop,it may only be a worn out volt regulator.Thank you and good hunting! PKD ps. the charge wire is RED.
