Volvo Repair: 1990 Volvo 240 blows A/C fuse, compressor cycles, home mechanic

Question
Thank you very much for the quick response.  Your response looks like it was cut off at the end.  Were you answering that the clutch is best replaced while the compressor is out?   Unfortunately, the system was recently re-charged (R-12) and I'd hate to waste all that money I just spent.  (Note: I was having this problem -before- the re-charge.)  Can I replace the clutch without removing the compressor?  I'm a fairly decent home-mechanic.   Thanks again for your help.   -_Chris

Hi,
I was wondering if you could help me with a 1990 240 A/C problem.   The a/c fuse for the compressor is blowing when the compressor cycles on, but only when the car is up to speed (i.e. at highway speeds.)  The system is fully charged and blowing nice cold air.  When the car is running at idle, the compressor cycles on-and-off just fine.  Also around town at lower speeds there is no problem.  As soon as I'm on the highway say above 50 mph, the fuse will blow when the compressor cycles on again.  I also think that if the engine was turning high enough rpm during a shift around town, it would probably also blow the fuse.   Hope you can help. (The system is still charged with R-12) Thank you.   --Chris

more than likely it is a short in the compressor clutch coil. which would be best to replace whle compressor

Answer
yes you can replace the clucth while it is on the car without loosing freon.remove the 12mm bolt on end of clutch then pry the outer clutch piece of with 2 screwdrivers working them back and forth.then behind it is a snap ring to remove the pulley then behind this are 3 philips screws.
