Volvo Repair: Manual Transmission - 01 S60T5, gear shift linkage, friction modifier

Question
I recently purchased a 2001 S60T5 with 112000 KM.
2 months since purchasing the car, the manual gear selector has become VERY stiff to shift in and out of each gate until the car has been at operating temperature for 12-20 minutes.  The stiffness is intermittent however, and occassionally the changes will be smooth, then revert back to being stiff again.

I suspect an adjustment to the gear shift linkage is required, or is there a guide plate that can come loose?

Will greatly appreciate an idea of what I'm dealing with before proceeding for repairs.

Thanks for any advice!

Answer
Could be a few possiblities:

1) poor clutch operation, not fully disengaging making gear movements more difficult

2) Fluid degridation, contains a friction modifier for synchros that may be breaking down making egnagement harder

3) Worn synchros, requires trans rebuild

Thats about all that will cause it.  Number 1 and 3 are the most likely though.  Number one could range from $200-1000 depending on how many clutch components have to be replaced. Number 3 would be at least $1000 possibly up to $3000.  Automatic transmissions can cost up to $4500 and that is just an estimate for the manual.  Hope that helps.
