Volvo Repair: Lose power, coolant temperature sensor, air intake hose

Question
I recently purchased a 1993 Volvo, 850. I had a new motor put in, replaced the alternator and the air intake hose. Now my car will just lose power while driving down the highway. It just shuts down, and all of the warning lights come on. I pull over, turn the car off and wait for a few minutes and the car starts right back up. I need your help understanding what the problem is. I had one guy tell me that it could be the 1-2-3 code? That's what the computer read but he didn't think that was causing the problems.  Please help!

Answer
The 1-2-3 code is for a failure in the engine coolant temperature sensor, either it is shorted internally in the sensor/wiring or there is an open circuit in the sensor/wiring.  This means that the engine module thinks the engine temperature is 250+ degrees farrenheit or -45 degrees farrenheit.  If it thinks the engine is running too hot that could be a very probable cause of the problem.  disconnect the sensor and using an ohmmeter check the resistance of the wires from the sensor to the computer.  If they are low (0-3 ohms) the wiring is good.  If that is the case replace the sensor and get the codes erased.  If the wiring is high (1,000,000+ ohms) there is an open in the wiring and all you have to do is find the break and repair it.  Good Luck.
