Volvo Repair: 1989 Volvo 760 Turbo 4cyl 3spdautotrans, coolant temperature sensor, fuel pressure regulator

Question
Starts right up in all weather, then runs very rough - have to play with gas pedal for about a minute, then idles okay.  Poor fuel mileage (approx. 16 mi/gal).  Also, shifts okay from first to second, but after that, most of the time I have to take foot off gas pedal to get it to shift before it revs very high - have to take foot off gas pedal to get it to shift above 40 mph.  Recent spark plugs, timing adjustment, distrib. cap, rotor, air and fuel filters, new fuel pump.  Satisfactory acceleration, except for the "semiautomatic" auto. transmission.  Please advise.  Thank you.

Answer
the shifting may be due to the shift cable needing adjusted.the running problem could be many things.it will really need to be looked at for a proper diagnosis.it could be a bad fuel pressure regulator leaking fuel out the vacuum side or bad engine coolant temperature sensor.
