Volvo Repair: 98 v70 check engine, volvo dealership, safe car

Question
Hi Regis,

I recently bought this car with 50k miles on it. The 90day warranty has now run out and on queue...the "check engine" light has come on. I've call the volvo dealership and they say it is safe to drive and will not hurt the car if I continue to do so. I have an appointment in 3 days.
1. Do you feel there is no danger in driving? I am in Maine (COLD) and I drive my 5mo/old daughter 40 miles each day?
2. What is the most common reason for this and the approx $$ in fixing?
3. I've read about codes etc. that come up when this light is on...where do I find them or is this only done at the garage?
4. Finally, what is your opinion on this make/model year combination as far as reliability goes? Should I trade? Thanks and happy holidays./
Rachel

Answer
1. if there is no sign of it running poorly it should be ok.this light can come on for reasons which will not affect the car.

2.many reasons for this light to come on.could be just a loose gas cap or gas cap on crooked.will need to be looked at to be properly diagnosed.

3.the codes need to be checked with a scan tool.

4.I have one myself.I think they are a good reliable car and more importantly they are a safe car.

Have A Happy Holidays
