Volvo Repair: 91 744 intermittent stalling, flash flash flash, fuel pump relay

Question
Hi. Car stalled twice yesterday.  During one stall, I was able to check the codes.  Putting the plug in Port 2, no code signals came back after pushing the black button.  Putting the plug in Port 6, the code 413 came back.  But after closing it up, the car restarted.  And with the second stall incident, the car will restart within 30 seconds. Seems it needs a tiny breather, but not a prolonged period such as to cool down from something.  Thanks, JD

Hi.
My 91 744 (non turbo, not SE)165k mi intermittently stalls while driving. It happens when there's a "change", ie: leaving a stop light, turning, slowing quickly.  Engine simply stops, without sputtering, as if the key was turned off, but accessories (fan, radio)continue to work.  Shop has performed a tune up and replaced the fuel pump relay.  Has also checked the connectors to same. Still happens, without any warning, but will restart after a few seconds of cranking (typically while rolling). Very freaky, family afraid to use car.
Thanks- Jack

many things can cause this. I would start with checking for diagnostic trouble codes.below is how to do so and if there are no codes I would replace the engine speed sensor if you were going to guess.

in the engine bay on the drivers side near the strut tower there is a small black box with a wire attached to it.place the wire in the terminal marked 2.turn ignition key on (not started)press the small button for 1 second and the code will be displayed as a series of flashes.a red led displays the codes.the code will be three digits.small pause in between flashes for a single number long pause between flashes for the next number.example 121 will be flash.....flash..flash.....flash.repeat three times or until first code repeats itself.to erase the code after all codes have been checked hold the button for a good 5 seconds then release the light should light steady, then press for another 5seconds.this will erase the codes.  email me the codes and i will tell you what they are..socket 2is the fuel system 6 is ignition.

Answer
the 413 refers to the EGR temperature sensor.this would not make it not start.

I would try wiggling the wires to the engine speed sensor which is located behind the cylinder head on top of the transmission and the ignition power stage which is beside the aircleaner housing on the inner fender.if you wiggle the wires on one and it seems to stall at that time I would replace that component.these would be 2 of the more common things to go bad.also some models have a black relay under the hood near the power steering resevoir this relay also goes bad often.check the connector to this relay.you can also take this relay apart and check for cracked solder joints and resolder them if there are any.
