Volvo Repair: 91 740SE Turbo wagon, flame trap, valve stems

Question
185,000 miles. Lots of  white smoke exhaust only certain times. Sounds funny but,I suspect has something to do with car being on step hill ,headed downwards. Some how loading up oil into turbo or collecting up on top of resevoir in valve rocker area and then getting sucked down valve stems. Something new. Symptom didn't seem to generate gradully.

Answer
Look carefully to see if smoke is white or bluish. White means coolant is getting in combustion chamber, blue means oil. If it's oil smoke it'll usually linger for awhile, whereas coolant will dissipate into the air quicker but also have a sweet smell.
If oil, check all the hoses for the flame trap system which is like the pcv system on other cars.Follow the long hose over the valve cover to both ends and make sure everything is clean and clear, blow out with compressed air. If hoses are hard, replace them.
If coolant, pressure test cooling system to check for leaks.
Lastly, white smoke when cold is normal condensation.
