Volvo Repair: Volvo 1993 240 with B230F motor, flame trap, flex plate

Question
Hi, This car has approx 180k miles, runs well.  Last week my son was driving on the highway, she screeched and suddenly died.  Would crank, but did not turn over.  Towed her to dealer, who diagnosed bad speed sensor and bent flex plate.  He replaced the speed sensor, the car idles fine, but misses on acceleration and throughout driving range.  Dealer wants to replace flex plate,$$$$$ but visual inspection shows a minor bend in the lip.  I will order housing cover plates so damage cannot recur.  Will a damaged flex plate cause the engine to miss?  I have replaced wires, cap rotor, and plugs, cleaned flame trap.  Today new air, fuel filter and possibly timing belt will go in.  ( My friend has a theory that the timing belt may have skipped a notch - is this possible?

Answer
Jumped tooth on timing belt will usually make car run very poor, no accleration. Confirm by checking ignition timing. If belt jumped tooth, igniton timing will usually be off by at least 15 degrees.
Haven't seen bent flex plate causing this problem, but quite possible. Curious as to how flex plate got bent in first place.
