Volvo Repair: water pump, replacing a water pump, hurricane charley

I'm replacing a water pump on a 1974 240. I put it back together and I'm having trouble getting tje top to seat. I checked the new rubber with the old rubber to make sure I have the right ones but it still leaks out the top.

First, sorry for late response.I am in SW Florida and if you do not know we were just hit by  Hurricane Charley Friday and I just got power 30 minutes ago.

I usually apply light grease to seal so it does not tear.and usually pry up on the pump when tightening the bolts
