Volvo Repair: hard to start/ even not starting-1989 240 DL, socket 6, socket 2

Question
Hi Regis,

Thanks for the info.

A couple more questions:

1   why is that when I try to release the fuel pressure, i.e.  run the engine, and take out the fuse for the fuel pump, the engine did not stop , until I turned off the key in 45 minutes ?

2    why the engine could not be started to run when it is under the sun , and when it is cool down in the evening, I could easily started it and ran the engine ?

3   where is the fuel control unit ? is it part of the computer ?

4   how to replace the fuel control unit ? or I need to replace the whole computer ?

Thank you.

Dear Regis,
Thanks again for the quick response.  I will do as you suggested.
Strange enough, this afternoon, I parked the vehicle on the driveway under the sun for about 1 hour, and tried to start the vehicle, it only cranked, but not running.  Immediately  I checked the computer code once more, here is what I had found:
at socket #2....there is no flash  coming out, absolutely  nothing at all- just dead;
at socket #6....1-1-1 came out as usual;
later at 10 pm, when it cooled down, I started the vehicle, just one turn on the key, I could start it right away....and I checked the code at Socket #2: it's the same 2-3-1; very strange;
that is to say: when no start- no code comes out at all;
         when it can start, code comes out as 2-3-1
hope the above information will help to further diagnosis the problem;
Thanks a million-------------------------

Hi Regis,
I got the computer code at socket # 2:
2-3-1

at socket 6:
1-1-1

Note: I got the code right after I could start the engine real easy without any trouble.

Thank you

Question -
Hi Regis,

First thanks for the help in advance...

the vehicle is hard to start, when happens- with only cranking, and no start...it happens momentarily, may happen in the morning, evening, or anytime. Sometimes, after 5-10 minutes,   it will start , sometimes need to wait over night, and can easily start like nothing happened...the fuel filter is 14 months new, starter is brand new, air flow master sensor is 12 months new, battery is fully charged, fuel tank is full....recently sent to nearby shop, left there for one week, couldn't find any problem...The mechanic said he could start it every single day.   On that day, I easily started the vehicle and left the shop, and stopped by the gas station to refill gas, and it couldn't start.  Then 11 minutes later it worked again....over all the car runs great, very strange...
One week later, I tried to relief the fuel system pressure, let the engine runs and take out the fuel pump fuse, the engine did not stall even for 45 minutes, I had to turned off the key...
pls advise...
Thank you so much....

Peter

first I would check for codes in the fuel and ignition control units.below is how to do so.

in the engine bay on the drivers side near the strut tower there is a small black box with a wire attached to it.place the wire in the terminal marked 2.turn ignition key on (not started)press the small button for 1 second and the code will be displayed as a series of flashes.a red led displays the codes.the code will be three digits.small pause in between flashes for a single number long pause between flashes for the next number.example 121 will be flash.....flash..flash.....flash.repeat three times or until first code repeats itself.to erase the code after all codes have been checked hold the button for a good 5 seconds then release the light should light steady,then press for another 5seconds.this will erase the codes.  email me the codes and i will tell you what they are..socket 2is the fuel system 6 is ignition.

231 would not keep it from starting.2 more common items would be a bad fuel pump relay or a bad engine speed sensor.the sensor is behind the head and it bolted on the top of the trans. bellhousing. the relay is up under the felt panel below the passenger side of the dash.if I had to gues I would try relay first then sensor.
Answer -
the not being able to read codes from the fuel control unit when it does not start is not good. this could be a problem in the fuel control unit.the engine speed sensor can be bad and give no code.only way to check the control unit would be try a known good one when you can not check codes and it does not start.

Answer
THE FUEL PUMP RELAY MAY BE STUCK SHUT.THERE ARE MANY THINGS THAT CAN ACT FUNNY WHEN THEY GET HOT.THE FUEL CONTROL UNIT IS THE COMPUTER.I WOULD HAVE THIS LOOKED AT TO AVOID JUST CHANGING PARTS AND WASTING MONEY.THE FUEL CONTROL UNIT AND RELAY ARE UNDER THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE DASHBOARD.THE FUEL CONTROL UNIT IS BEHIND THE PANEL NEXT TO WHERE THE PASSENGERS RIGHT FOOT WOULD BE.
