Volvo Repair: transmission whine, 2000 volvo s80, volvo s80

Question
Thank you for getting back to me.

The dealer said that it would be around $3000 for a rebiuld. That sounds like a lot of money (I also checked Ammco and they were about the same).

Am I better off putting a used trans in it?  What is the life expectancy of one of these transmissions?

Thank you
Chris

Question -
I have a 2000 Volvo S80 with automatic trans and 106000 miles.

The transmission always whined when I was going up a steep hill but now is doing it on flat ground.  The fluid is starting to turn a little grey color as well.  Fluid level is correct.  Is this something that a transmission shop can adjust (such as bands) or should I bite the bullet and take it to the dealer.

Thank you
Chris
Answer -
unfortunately there is nothing to adjust.this was not volvos best transmission.you may want to at least have the dealer look at it.

Answer
this particular trans. I would not want to get a used one.if it were an older volvo and not an S80 I would.you will be better off with a rebuild at least they would have fixed the problem areas in it and hopefully it will last longer.since I am not allowed to say this trans. is junk especially a 99  I won't.if you were going to sell the car a used trans. might be an option.sorry fo all your trouble.I still believe volvos are a good car.but the 99 s80 was not all that good.
