Volvo Repair: Replacing parts, shift lever knob, overdrive switch

Question
How do I replace the shift lever cover on an 86 240DL with automatic transmission?  The original cover was gone when I bought the car.  I have found a replacement and installing the cover itself looks very simple, but how do I get past the shift lever knob?

the shifter button on top of the lever will need to be pried upwards with a screwdriver.becareful it has a spring under it and when prying on it when it lets go it will fly off.I would put my hand on it when you pry it.also it may be best to buy a new button as they usually break.then you can disconnect the overdrive switch and remove the knob.
