Answer
Jameco,
Although I'm not one to swap motors from one make into a car of another... I do admire your insight.  The E30 is a great platform to start with, and weighing close to 2500lbs it's pretty light too.  To answer your question... Yes it will fit.  Easily....NO!  It all depends on what tranny you are running behind it.  First off the car will not perform well as a drag car.  The independent suspension will cause the rear wheels to toe-in during hard launches.  The rear end wont take more than 250-300lb/ft of torque either.
But as a track car (which is where the car shines) it wouldn't be too bad.  I wouldn't recommend a cast-iron 350 though.  Too heavy!  If I were you I would look for an LS1 from a late model Camaro/Firebird/Vette and put a T56 6-speed behind it.  That car would be untouchable!  You would have the all aluminum engine for weight savings, fuel injection, 6-speed... it would be great! I bet it would get 30+ miles per gallon too (if you keep your foot out of the throttle).  That being said, I know there have been guys drop LS1/LT1 engines into these cars... and they scoot!
This is an LS1 dropped into an E36 (later 3-series)
