BMW: 92 325i manual trans, 1992 bmw 325i, bmw 325i

Question
Hey, If you could shed some light on my little, but expensive problem that would be great. I recently traded into a 1992 BMW  325i with a manual Trans and a 2.5 6 cyl eng. The problem is that there is no 2nd gear. It makes no noise when its in the 2nd gear position and the clutch doesn't have to be pressed. The guy I got it from says there is a clip to attach to the 2nd gear shift fork. Although he could of been misleading me. I have been to a few shops and they try to sell me a new Trans( this will cost $3000).   I just want some unbiased advise on situation. Any way I enjoy the car it was a good trade. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Jason,
Unfortunately I cannot see the vehicle nor drive it to tell you exactly what the problem is.  If the transmission will go into every gear but 2nd, then it's definately an internal transmission problem.  These transmissions are pretty much bullet proof, as long as you arent drag racing them they will do a good job.  In fact, I've NEVER had a problem with any of my E30 transmissions.  I would check Ebay for a used transmission.  Preferably one with less than 100k miles.  You should be able to get this cheap (less than $500) and then have some one put it in.  While you are in there, you should put in a new clutch as well.

For the time being, I would drive the car skipping 2nd gear.  This means you'll probably have to wind-out 1st gear a little before you shift into 3rd.

 Good luck,
 Josh
