BMW: Engine Start, starter solenoid, bmw 323i

Question
Hi,

I have a 1999 BMW 323i (4 door - 80,000 kms), I recently encountered issues when turning the key and I get no response from the engine. I turn back the key and try to restart and the engines starts. This has been going on for a week or so, the first time is not successfully, however, with the second and sometimes third attempt the engine starts.

Can you please advise if this may be caused by a faulty key or a faulty starter?

Thank you,
Peter

Answer
Peter,
Sounds like you have already figured it out. It is either the ignition switch or the starter SOLENOID.  I dont think it is the whole starter.  There is a switch on the starter that engages when you turn the key, these go bad from time to time, so I would try this as my first suspect.  if it doesn't fix the problem, then try the ignition switch.

 Good luck
 Josh
