Cadillac: 1963 cad not getting fuel, vacuum suction, rubber line

Question
in 1995 my 63 cad wouldn't start after 3 weeks. i added gas, and that wasn't it. not wanting to put miles on it, it has sat until now. i replaced the orig. fuel pump and nothing. replaced the rubber fuel and vapor return lines at the tank and the engine area and the fuel filter  nothing. the fuel guage works, and i've added six gallons, and primed and cranked, still no gas to the filter bowl. it runs on a prime.
what will need to be done to the tank, and how do i do it, if that's the problem? thanks, patriotm1

Answer
Ok, The 63 has a mechanical fuel pump on the side of the engine block.

When you installed it you either:

1. Missed the cam excentric on the front of the camshaft (which is a round piece of metal shaped like an egg) which the arm of the fuel pump rides on in the front of the engine.

2. You have a hole or rusted steel line back to the gas tank.

3. You have a faulty pump.

Taake the rubber line off the pump that attaches to the steel line along the frame that goes back to the fuel tank. Put your thumub in the ruber hose and crank the engine and if the pump does not suck on your thumb (a vacuum) you missed the excentric when you installed the pump.

You can take a can of gas and extend the rubber line as stated above and put it into a gas can and try and start the car to see if the pump will suck the gas out of the can. If it won't, You missed the excentric when installing it.

If it does suck the gas into the bowl and the engine runs, Your line going back to the fuel tank has holes in it and your losing the vacuum suction from the pump.

When your installing the pump as you start to tighten your bolts you should feel some resistance which is the pump arm contacting the excentric on the front of the camshaft.

Now you made me feel so OLD, that I need to take a nap.
