1998 Cadillac Catera  - Intermittently, won't start. Replaced starter, battery, alternator still have problem. Have to wait probably 30 minutes, then it will start. Everything works, lights windows etc but won't start.
Thank you

DEFINE won't start. Are you saying that when you turn the key the engine does NOT even crank over or is there no sound at all when you turn the key ?.
Correct, there is no sound at all and the engine does not crank over. The instrument panel lights all light up when I turn the key but that's it. If the car is driven for more than say 30 minutes and is turned off, it won't start up without waiting at least 20-30 minutes. It's almost like something needs to cool down before the car will start again. Today for example, it happened twice after being driven for more than 30 minutes but the 3rd time it started right up after being driven for 30 minutes. There are 101,000 miles on the car.
Thank you for all your help.

Answer
I can give you a simple test procedure that requires the use of an automotive test light and a helper.

If you can do a simple test with the test light at the starter with a helper I can provide you with the the necessary electrical schematic and procedure to do this.

Without doing the simple test procedure, The most likely cause is a fault within the starter and or within the starter solenoid of which would be BEST to replace the STARTER and STARTER SOLENOID due to the high mileage on the vehicle.

Or you can remove the starter and take it into most any auto parts store, Autozone, pep boys, checkers, napa and they will test it for you.

HOWEVER, It may test just fine when it is COLD but NOT test OK when it is HOT.

It is BEST to perform the test procedure that I can provide when the engine is HOT and the fault is occurring.
