My '99 Deville with 56,000 miles has an erratic starting problem. Some times it starts perfectly, and other times it has to crank several times (several seconds) before it starts. It doesn't seem to matter whether the engine is hot or cold. Once the car  starts it runs fine, idles fine, and runs strong. I do use premium gas.  It's been like this for 4 plus months.

What do you suggest?
Answer -
OK, Using a helper:

1. remove the gas cap.

2. have your helper turn the ignition switch to the ON position ONLY. Do NOT try and start the engine.

3. While you are listening at the gas cap hole at the fuel tank as soon as your helper turns the ignition switch to the ON position as said above, You should hear your electric fuel pump in the fuel tank run for ONLY 2 seconds and then STOP. Does it ?.

Yes, I hear it for a couple of seconds and then it stops.

Answer
OK, That confirms that the fuel pump circuit is operating correctly.

Other INTERMITTENT FAULTS are:

1. Crank shaft sensor.

2. Ignition module.

3. ignition coil.

4. Weak fuel pump pressure or low fuel volume.

Tets need to be performed on these items.
