Chevrolet: 79 camaro ingnition lock, 79 camaro, keys to my car

Question
I had lost the keys to my car and bought a new ignition for it. I have the steering column all the way disassembled like I've read but i still can not get the lock cylinder out. I was wondering if i need the key or is there anyway around it without it.

Answer
Levi,
Unfortunately if I remember right you have to turn the cylinder to the "on" position to get it out. There are a couple of options though. You can take the paperwork for the car, registration ect. to a dealer and they might be able to cut a key off the VIN number, or you can have a locksmith come out and make one... in my area it runs 50 to 60 dollars. I have drilled a couple of them out, but it is really a complicated process as you can damage stuff in there that you don't want to damage. It stinks, but they did it that way for safety so you can't just remove a cylinder without the keys. Good Luck!
