Chevrolet: valve adjustment, chev c30, compression stroke

Question
I just replaced the heads on a 1980 chev c30. Before I put the intake back on I turned the engine over by hand, when the lifter hit bottom I adjusted the nut until the push rods were dragging, then went one half turn more. Got everything together now it sounds like there is no compression.

Answer
Brad,
This is one I personally run into now and then. When adjusting the valves, turn the motor over till it is in the number one firing position. (Put your finger on the valves of number one while turning over the motor to align the marks to 0 degrees, or TDC... (top-dead-center)... if the valves move, you are firing number six and the crank needs one more revolution to come to the compression stroke on one. While at TDC on compression one, you can adjust the intake valves for 1,2,5,&7. At this time, adjust the exhaust valves for 1,3,4 &8. Back off the nuts until you get some lash in the pushrods, then tighten till you don't have anymore lash. tighten an additional 1/2 to 3/4 turn for flat lifters, and 3/4 to 1 turn for rollers. Turn the engine over one full revolution to TDC (firing number six), and adjust intake 3,4,6, &8 and exhaust 2,5,6, &7. This should fix your problem, by adjusting every valve at the bottom, you may have the valves not coming fully closed. Let me know if it doesn't work and we'll dig a little further.
