Chevrolet: chevy overheating, 2000 chevy cavalier, chevy cavalier

Question
I just got a 2000 chevy cavalier with a 2.2 4 cylinder engine. It's has an automatic transmission and it has 101,000 miles on it. I took it out today to see what it could do. I drove it harder than usual, but not real hard. I just gunned it down pretty hard a couple times. When I got back home, it was running slightly hotter than normal as expected, but as it set and idled it kept getting hotter. Could it be that it just needed to cool down or is there another problem? It had a little smoke coming from it and it had a burning smell. I noticed that the electric fan didn't come on. Could it be something wrong with the fan and if so, would it need to be replaced. If you can help me any, it would be greatly appreciated

Hi well I hope you did not blow a gasket. with those miles you should baby it. check the oil to see if it is white or if it has any white on the dip stick, and check the radiator for any  oil. if that is all ok but it is still running hot, I would have a radiator pressure test taken, this will tell you if there is any trouble.check the fans fuse.
