Chevrolet: timing, small block chevy, chevy points

Question
how can i time a small block chevy   [points type] i am not sure what year engine they put in there i have set every thing but its poping back through carb also how can i tell if its jumped time thanks for your help

 HI, I hope that the dist. was not removed, if so thats the trouble. if you pop the no#1 plug than look at the rotor ,after you remove thr dist cap it should be on the no #1 plug wire. if not than the timeing is off.let me know if you took the dist, out  ok.
