Chevrolet: A/C noise from compressor, engine speeds, serpentine belt

Question
I have a 2000 Impala with the 3.8 V6.  Recently, the a/c compressor started making a noise like a clicking/pinging when the a/c is on.  The noise gets louder and more rapid as the engine speeds up.  Do I need a new a/c compressor?  Can a used compressor work just as well?  Is there a kit from Chevy that will fix the noise?  If I operate the car without the a/c on, will the serpentine belt eventually freeze?  Thank you.

Answer
Steve;
 Hi  I thought I sent this to you a day ago, well
it sounds like the comp. is going the longer you wait the more damage it can cause. it might just need oil or it could be the clutch ,etc
I would never put a used part in a car, it could go at any time. There is no kit I know about , it could be rebuilt.
it might be safe with it off but if the clutch goes it could snap the belt. if there is no noise at all and the clutch is working than it should be safe to use with it off till you get it repaired  ok...
