Chevrolet: timing issue?, 68 firebird, chevy 350

Question

Well after several weeks away. (military) I was able to get the car started and timed. +4 Deg.  Now when I drive the car around 3k rpm the car backfires and looses power.  I just went and bought new plugs wires before I started my disaster. I have moved the timing back and forth +8 to -4 and it does the same thing. Any ideas.

-----Question-----
Tried it again and got some noise this time.
Can you clarify. TDC is the top dead center of the engine?  I turn the car over until compression, mark is somewhere on the timing bar.  Then continue to turn until the mark is lined up again with the top of the engine?
Thanks.

Question -
I bought a 68 firebird and it has a chevy 350 in it.  I needed to replace the manifold gasket because of a water leak.  I marked the electronic distributor placement and then removed it.  After putting it all back together the car wont start.  I checked all wires are hooked up, removed the distributor again and #1 plug.  Felt for compresion lined up the distributor again.  Car turns over but backfires.

 HI it sounds like the dist .  is off a bit. you should pop no# 1 plug than look  at the timeing mark and get it to tdc.  than put the dist. in with the rotor faceing the no#1 plug wire on the cap. than drop it in,if it will not drop all the way down hold it in place and have someone just tap the key till it drops into place .  than check to see if it is still on the #1 plug spot when on tdc.  if it is off a bit it will not run.  so just try to do it once more  ok..>

John ;
  OK - pop the no#1 cyld. till it pushes your finger off , than look at the timeing mark and make it go to the center
  TDC it might be real close as when it pops it is next to it. than take the dist and in one hane and place the cap on it to see where the no31 plug wire spot is than place the rotor at the no# 1 plug spot and drop the dist in tne hole keeping it at the no# 1 position. than when it drops in place put the clamp on snug than you can turn it till it runs good than when running and warm- time it. you might have to try a few times till you get it right.    if it pops and back fires it is 180 off.  so you will get it. ok

Answer
no- TDC is when the mark is in the center of the timeing marks not at 12:00   and if the dist is in wrong you will never get it to run right till it is in right. so when you pop the no#1 plug the first plug on drivers side  with your finger over the plug hole have someone tap the key with the coil wire out when your finger pops off than you should be close to TDC , so turnn the fan belt by hand till tou get the timeing mark on TDC center line now with the dist cap off the rotor should be on the no #1 plug wire spot. if not than its in wrong. also the wires could be crossed. 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2- you  will get it .
