Chevrolet: 2000 chevy tracker, radiator flush, catalatic converter

Question
I have just purchase a "repo" that sat for a yr/
I was driving it for about 2 weeks/ & i have put good gas & cleaners in tank. {the light for engine check came on right after 51000 / My mech got it off after all the stuff done/ but it is on again.} Last sunday it was all i could do to get home with out giving up that the car would get me there. It lost all its power.  The mechanic I am taking it too, says he will test the Fuel pump (we already replaced the fuel filter, fuel line, did a tune up, oil flush/ change, radiator flush, )  / but someone else thinks its the catalatic converter? I really want to get this car driving/ (as my other car " 1994 dodge shadow is on it last leg & I have no a/c!) (live in TX)
Thank you for any help you can give me.
Sincerely,
Carolyn HOnesty

Answer
 CAROLYN ;
          HI - when the light comes on it means something is starting to go or something needs to be looked at. so as far as the light , it can come on and stay on for little things - like the gas cap , if it is not on right it can keep the light on. I do not think that your cat. conveter
is bad , as long as the muffler is working ok ,  and if it is not plugged up- I don't think it is the cat. I would check the MAP sensor first. and when the mech. checks it , it will tell him what is wrong when the codes come up. ok
and the fuel pump could be bad.....>>>
