Chevrolet: 1981 camaro 5.7 4bb, stock carb, smell of gas

Question
The car always had a strong smell of gas when you came to a stop. A friend told me to adjust the carb the air and fuel needles one on the left and right of the stock carb.But it was back firing thru the carb,I turn the needles back to right until they stoped and back them off a 1/4 turn counter clock wise.But I think the wires are cross,How do you find the tdc.The orginal carb was replaced with a standard quader jet.

Answer
Dave;
 Hi- why do you need the TDC , did you remove the distributor? if you have a wire crossed just re-check them the wires are 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2- and the driver side is 1.3.5.7 and pass. 2-4-6-8 and the dist. cap goes clockwise.   ok and the TDC  you can get by removing the plug in the no# 1 cyld. and pop it and when it pushes your finger off / the harmonick bal. should be on or close to TDC you can tap the key or turn the fan a little to get it there, on the timeing mark.
and as far as the carb. adj. screws you might have to open it a little more , turn the screws in than back out till it sounds the best - and you can try it a few times if need be till it gets where you want it. ok
