350,bored 60 over,10.5:1 compression pop up pistons,edelbrock cam .488-.510 lift,edelbrock performer intake,edelbrock600 carb,accell hei ignition and bosch wires and ac delco plugs. first problem is when the car is running in park tach says it is only revving to about 3500 rpm sounds like its reving way higher,second problem it seems to run out of power when driving it at around 3500 rpm almost like the ignition is cutting out.acts just like the rev limiter on my new sunfire. could this be a worn out distributor causing this?

Mike;
  I would check the carb. out re- adj. it. it should be idleing  around 800- 900 + rps or even more with the cam. I would check the timeing and than play with the carb. a bit. you might be just having a flat spot . and when you say 3500rpms I hope that you do not mean 3 thous 5 hund.RPMs  if yes than there is something wrong. and yes there could be something wrong with the dist..

yes i mean it will only rev to about 3 thousand 5 hundred rpm with or without a load. could it be the cam possibly?
Answer -
Mike;
  Wow  if you can only get 3500  rpms out of it there is something wrong - you should be getting 7000 rpm out of it and shifting at 6000. I would first check to see if the dist. was put in right. check if the no#1 is where it should be when you pop the no#1  cyld. TDC. it should be on  the no 1 plug wire on the cap , if not thats where your trouble is.  I would check that first ...but you should be getting some hi revs with all of that.

i checked the distributor and even put a new one in with no change at all. tried setting the valves by loosening them until they started clacking and then tightened until they stopped. this made a huge difference in bottom end power but it still cuts out around 38-4000 rpm now. could the cam and lifters be damaged?
Answer -
MIKE;
   Hi- I wonder what the cam is solids or hyd. lifters ? if hyd. you did it right but if solids  than its wrong.
also have you looked into the carb. to see if it is opening up all of the way ? I do not see how the cam / lifters can only  let you get 4000 rpms  out of  it. what is the fuel psi.  do you have a rpm kill switch on it ?
if the motor is running good w/o  missing than the cam / lifters are  ok. it makes no sence why it will cut out . do you have a differnt tach. try to un hook the tach you have on it now see if that helps. there is something wrong and I bet it is simple . its finding it thats hard.  when you say cuts out do you mean like turning the key off or it just will not rev any more .

its acting just like a rev limiter at 3800 rpm it has no more pull and just falls over itself.no rpm kill switch on it,just wondering if its valve float not letting it rev up?
Answer -
Mike;
  with that cam I do not think the valves are floating - is the timeing correct , and was the timeing chain put on right , if it is off bu 1 tooth it will cause all types of trouble. did you try it with the tack dis connected .to see if the tack is shorting out?
is it a solid or hyd cam.

if the timing chain was installed wrong would it run this good untill 3800 rpm?

Answer
HI;
  If and I hope not but if the chain was  on a tooth off yes it could still run but all the adj. and timeing would be off. I do not think it is wrong , It could be the fuel pump or the loab  on the cam .. it could be a lot of things - the trouble is finding it. can you get a elect pump to try it. or check the fuel pump  psi.s
