Chevrolet: 1998 Cavalier EGR, nitrogen oxides, egr valve

Question
The check engine light is on and after having a mechanic run a test on it - said the EGR needed to be cleaned out.  Is this something that can be done without taking it to the shop?  And will it hurt the engine if it's not fixed immediately? Neither of us are mechanics!
Thanks
Janann

Answer
HI Janann;
   OK well the egr valve does one thing and that is to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) it re-burns some gasses that are sent to it. It can be cleaned but should be done by a professional. As far as a new part it should run around     $ 100.00 for a new part and that is with labor.
