Hi'
 I wonder if there are any wires crossed  , and  were the new wires hooked up right.? . when you hook up the battery - you say it tries to start itself ? w/o the key in it ?i would say that the selonoid might be bad or  a wire is crossed.Re check all wires and look for any jumper wire if it was hot wired.

Sherry;
  If you have the battery in correct and the cables in right when you hook up the pos to  the pos and the neg  to the neg it  will spark a little as the juice is going threw the circut with the key off  and lights off , etc. the battery can / will spark a little , if it was wrong it would spark real big or it could even explode. so if it is all hooked up right it should start when you turn the key .
and if you do have it hooked up right and when you turn the key and it dosent start , the battery could be dead , if you have put the battery down on the ground at any time for a few hours , it could be dead , as the battery will ground itself and drain all of the juice into the natural ground and in turn go dead. you place a piece of wood down than the battery on the wood,etc. so try to start it. let me know OK. ps do the lights and radio , horn etc. work ?

  I wish I was there so I could see what is going on, if all is hooked up right and if no one cut or jumped any wires (at all) if there is only one wire hooked up wrong it can cause some serious damage , I would have a second person with the key in the ing. and the other + holding +   the wire on the post and try to turn the key and start it ,this way if anything gos wrong you can just lift the wire off the battery. - or you can have some one that knows to look at it, it is hard for me because it is the type of thing where I would have to be there.did you hook up the fuseable link the right way ? and as for the cut wires are they on right ?
