Chevrolet: Front Axle change, pontiac bonneville, wheel bearings

Question
I know this isn't a chevy but maybe it is close?  I have a 2000 Pontiac Bonneville that is making noises.  The noise is coming from the front and is speed related --- as I speed up the noise is louder and changes pitch.  A turn to the right quiets it somewhat but a left turn has no effect.  It is not rekated to engine speed and it is not a radio type of electrical hum.  The wheeel bearings are sealed and expensive (rebuilt axles are comparatively cheap) and I know it will be tough to guess which it is and which side.  Any insight into how I might decide which?  I think I can change the bearings ok but how do I get the axles out if I need to change them?  If it helps I only have 58000 mi on it.

Answer
hello mike, i dont think the axles are the problem, axles will cause a cracking noise when you turn sharp at low speeds when they start to fail. i think its your wheel bearing, im guessing on the left ( but check to make sure)how i check wheel bearings, jack up either side (make sure its supported good) put the transmission in neutral, tightly grasp the spring with one hand and spin the wheel with to other, if the bearing is rough you will feel it in the spring, try both sides to determine what one is giving the noise.    hope i was able to help you  thanks keith
