Chevrolet: 1994 Cavalier problem, chevy cavalier, timing advance

Question
I have a 1994 Chevy Cavalier. The Check engine light comes on intermittantly. The car has no power at take off and when the power comes back it bogs down again around 50mph this problem is getting worse and I belive I have black smoke coming out of the tail pipe when this happens. I checked the plugs and they have black deposits on them. I thought maybe it was a timing problem but this has that distributorless timiming system.
Am I wrong about the timeing? If not how do I adjust it? If so what cold be my problem?
any help would be great
thanks

Answer
It would help if I knew what motor you have.
You have a rich running condition causing all of your problems. I cant tell you what to check because I dont know which motor you have.
You are wrong about the ignition system. You have a distrutorless IGNITION system, not a TIMING system. You still have a timing chain and gears that need to be in time. The timing advance is controled by the computer and there are no adjustment that you can make.
