Chevrolet: Rough running GEO, elmendorf afb alaska, grissley

Question
Sir,
My name is Mike Sanders and I am stationed at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska. I recently purchased a 1991 Geo Storm 2+2 (engine code 6), it has 80000 miles on it and ran great for the first couple months. About 2 weeks ago i went out to start it to warm it up (gets cold in Alaska) and came out later and it was dead. I tried to start it and it did not want to stay started so i reved it as i started it and it stayed running as long as i kept my RPMs up. About 3 blocks down the road i pushed the clutch and it idled fine. After work that evening i got into it to go home and it started fine but the idle went up to the 3000RPM range and stayed there, when i put it in gear the car drove ok but when i pushed th clutch to idle or stop it went up to 3000, i stopped at the gas station thinking this was a fuel issue and got a bottle of HEAT for the gas tank, when i cam out it had stalled. I put the HEAT in the tankl and started it back up and low and behold it ran like normal. Over the next couple of weeeks it had the same symptoms sometimes and sometimes it ran like a champ. I have changed the oil and filter, spark plugs, checked the PCV Valve, changed the Oxygen sensor just today and nothing has helped, it still idles either really high or bounces between 500-2000 RPMs till it dies. If you have any ideas on this please i am all ears, as you know military people dont have much in the way of monetary means, so any help you can give would be great.

I'am a ARMY VET. /  MY Cousin was also statined in Alaska back in the 60s. than He stayed there when He got out and He started up a hunting/guide and a pilot /place,he was killed by a grissley bear due to a punk kid that went hunting with his rich daddy. It got my cousin killed there was a big thing about it when it happened due to the kid was hunting moose and he shot a bear due to it was eating the moose so the kid shot it when my cousin was not looking.
Any way did you try to adj. the carb/choke as it sounds as if something is sticking and causing the gas to rev. get a can of carb cleaner spray and clean the linkage real good and all moving parts, etc on the carb.& choke, this should do it. or the return spring could be weak.
