Hello i own an automatic 1970 Chevelle and I need some advise about the transmission. I would like to know if it is a good idea to rebuild it. There is a loud "clunk" noise when i put it in reverse. I went ahead and fixed the u joints already but the noise is still there when changed to reverse. I feel the changes just a little, but im not sure what to do. I would like to know what a good price would be to rebuild it and also what are the ranges. Is it better to have it checked and fixed or should i just show up at a place and ask them to rebuild it, what would cost more or less? I would really appreciate your response, thank you for your  time.

hi,
you say you had the u-joints re-placed both ?
the noise could be comming from the rear-end also such as the ring & pinion or axels or the spider gears, as noises are trickey they can come from the weirdest places, i think that you should take it to a tranny place, not a gas station or shop , but a place like minike, or aamco , some place that just does trannys. and tell them that you want a  check out on it to see what is causing the noise and tell them to just give you a price on the trouble that thay find , then e-mail me back ok and i will try to give you a idea if it is a good price or what ever they find ok I do not want to see you get ripped off.

hello
its me again
I dropped my car off at aamco for a free check and they said the transmission has some loose parts, but they were not specific about it. They said i have two options one is for them to fix the problem i guess the loose parts and that will be about $600 not including the parts. My second option is to have it rebuilt like new they said and that will cost me $1,081. when i said i would have to think about it he told me that he will fix the problem for $600 and he will include the parts and labor. I wasn't sure what to do so i started calling other places. I called six places all together three said they would do it for $300-485, and the other three estimated between $700-900. I didn't have enough time before the rest were closed for the day or else i would of called the tye braker. So now im confused should i go with the cheaper ones? or will i get what i pay for?
please respond and i will greatly appreciate it
thanks for your time

hi,
first of all you did the right thing by calling a few places, are the places that said 300. and 485.  just gas stations or repair shops? and what kind of a  service contract  will you get - as how  long  will they stand buy there work.   Aamco at 600. with  a good one year or longer on the repair is good .but are the cheeper places also tranny shops.? as a cheep job might get you into more trouble. but at 1.081.00 for a rebuilt one is not a bad price at all, is that for the full job ? and how long of a
contract on the rebuilt one ?
get back to me ok

hi,
well all the places i mentioned were from the yellow pages under transmissins. So they are not gas stations. I didn't want to let aamco do any work yet because i kind of felt pressured by them and thought they might be ripping me off but i don't really know, i just guessed. well anyways i also noticed that in some of the ads that i mention all parts and labor have a 1 year or 12,000 mile warranty on any rebuilt. and one of those claimed to charge $300 but it has to be in cash. It is really hard to tell which is best. i spent a lot of time looking at the yellow pages, cuz then i started looking at how long their company has been around. one that was for $900 mentioned it will be a complete overhaul. well when i choose to go to one i will ask what services are included. But is it possible to get an inexpenisive job that will be done right? and thats  all the info i got from them for now
thanks for your time.

Answer
EDTNA,
Well You are doing your homework that is for shure, good for you. I don't know where you live but for the price of around $1,000.00 for a re-built transmission with a one year warranty is outstanding !! if that is for the full price - labor-parts-and your core meaning your old tranny so it can be re-built.  the total of a price for apx. $1,000.00 -$1,200.00 is a great price if it is for EVERYTHING ! so make sure it is for the full job, no extras for fluid at 5.00 per can as your tranny convertor might hold 8 or more cans of fluid, and does that price include a new convertor ?? or do they use your old one ? as if it does come with a re-built convertor and front seal I would JUMP on the price if it is as low as $1,200.00 that is a great price for a re-built tranny and a 1 year warrenty, and if a re-built convertor comes with it that is great, but if it does not come with a re-built convertor -  it is still good as long as they drain yours out and clean it and re-place all the fluid.you are getting a great price, as I had a 1970 chevy and I had a rebuilt tranny put in it and that was in the 1980s and it was a lot more than $1,200.00 as it was winter and I had no place to do it at the time so I was stuck and it cost a lot more than your prices. so what ever way you go for the sum of $1,200.00 or less you are doing real good and that is a real good price as in this area of westchester county new york state I think that it would run close to the sum of $ 3,000.00 to do it.
so good for you and what ever way that you do go at that price range you can not loose.
good lock
