Chevrolet: Cavalier, worst case scenario, gas tank

Question
Thank you so much for your response to my question!  I actually found someone who came to the apartment and checked the engine yesterday evening.  He pulled the large hose on the top loose and sprayed something into it.  He had me start the engine.  It took a couple of times, but it did start and ran for a minute or so while he had the hose off and was spraying down into it.  He then told me to turn it off, turn the key to the forward position without turning it over.  He attached some little clips to something on the left side, then told me the problem was a sensor in the gas tank that had shorted out - something to do with fuel injection.  He said labor would be about $360 and since the part would have to come directly from Chevrolet, it would be about the same, $350.   Can you tell me if this sounds accurate?  I just didn't understand how spraying something in the hose would start it if it was a sensor in the gas tank.  Thank you so much for your time.

I have a 2000 Cavalier, just the basics - no power windows, etc.  I'm sorry, but I don't know what size engine, I'm assuming the 2.2L.  I've never had one bit of trouble, putting only a battery on since I've had it.  I drove 350 miles Sat., had my oil changed while there, then drove back.  Car ran fine.  I stopped several times and car started up no problem.  I parked the car at 7:30 p.m. Sat. and didn't try to drive again until Mon. a.m.  It's turning over, but not catching.  I'm concerned that maybe it's the timing.  Does this car have a timing chain?  I know there's something called the timing chain tensioner.  I'm in the process of looking to trade it in and can't spend the money to repair it, but need to know what worst case scenario could be.  I found online that the tensioner is about $95 for parts and $390 for labor.  Is there anything worse that it could be?  Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Answer -
I doubt that it is the timing chain. It is probably more like a fuel pump or ignition module. If you are planning on trading it in, you will get more out of it if it is running. It might be worth getting it dianosed first to see if it is worth putting money into.

Answer
He probably meant the fuel pump. Sounds like your not getting gas and thats why it started with the spray.
The price of the part sounds about right but the labor sounds high.It should be around $150-200.
You could call a Chevy dealer and have them give you an estimate on parts and labor to replace the fuel pump. That will give you a better idea of the correct cost.
