Chevrolet: Basic Maintenance, 1997 chevrolet cavalier, power steering fluid

Question
I have a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier (used).  This is my first car, I'd like to keep it as long as I can and I think that starts with basic maintenance, like changing the oil regularly.  Could you give me an idea what people tend to forget about?  I know the bare basics, so anything you can tell me would be greatly appreciated.  I feel not knowing makes me a huge target for un-honest mechanics to take advantage of.

Answer
I'm glad to here you ask about basic maintenance. Most people anymore figure that if it isnt broken, dont fix it. But then when it does break, they are the first ones to complain about the cost of repairs.
First, change the oil and filter every 3000 miles and rotate the tires every other oil change. Also have the brakes inspected at the same time since the wheels will all ready be off of the car.
Get the suspension checked at least once a year and have an alignment done if everything is OK.
Change the air and fuel filter about every 20,000.
You dont need to replace the plugs or the coolant for 100,000 on your car but I suggest that you do both around 90,000.
Get the transmission fluid flushed every 30,000 and have the filter replaced every other flush.
Thats about it. If you keep up on these things, your car will last a long time. Also if you notice it doing something not normal, get it in to the shop as soon as you can. If you start letting things go they will start to pile up on you and then you wont be able to take care of your car the way that you should.
Good luck with your new car. I hope it treats you well. Also if you need any more advice or have any questions, feel free to ask anytime.
You should also have the power steering fluid and brake fluid flushed at least every 2 years.
