Dodge: Tailgate down fuel efficiency, wind tunnel tests, collision hazard

Question
Have you consulted any aerodynamics engineer at Ford, GM, etc. when you stated that a tailgate down will reduce drag? This wives tale question has been asked repeatedly. Many people offer opinions - not fact - usually done to sell a product. The best facts I have learned come from Ford Aerodynamics engineering department.  If you believe them a tailgate down INCREASES drag from 0.5 to 1.0%. That's not much but it's still a drag increase. The truck is "designed" to be driven with the gate up. Also you suggested adding a flow through net. according to Ford, wind tunnel tests show that it can INCREASE drag maybe as much as 4 to 5% (depending on style. In a nutshell: It is smarter and better to keep the gate up. 1) a gate up traps a "bubble" of air which aides the smooth airflow from around the Cab. 2) If you want fuel efficiency, add a bed cover. It can save 5% on drag. 3) From personal experience, it is a safety issue for other cars and people to keep the gate down. A black truck, parked at night in shadows, has his gate down. That gate is nearly invisible in those conditions, a collision hazard, and a ticketable offense in some states.

Answer
The guy asked my opinion and i told him,it isn't about wives tales or engineers. This is a free opinions website. Not one for someone like you to come here and criticize everyone for their thoughts. If you want your tailgate up then leave it up,if you want an airnet then buy one if you don't go criticize somone else. This is my opinion! The guy aparently was concerned about fuel mileage or air drag,it's no big deal.If you want you can sign up and give your opinion to them then.
