Dodge: dodge ram van, dodge ram van, disc brakes

Question
There is a terrible grinding noise in the front left tire. One place told me the bearings were bad. I had them packed on Jan.14, 2004. The place that packed them said the sleeve on the rotor was making the grinding sound and i needed new rotors. So I went from a $95 job to a $4oo job! What to do?

Answer
If the bearings were bad they should have been replaced not repacked! If the brakes are worn out they can cause the grinding noise,When the pad gets too thin it will cause the srubbing sound.I would recommend taking the car to someone you know or trust and ask them if the disc brakes are worn.It could also be a bad spot on the rotor, but rotors can be turned without having to replace them. This is a process where the rotor is put on a machine and turned while metal is being scraped off which rebalances out the rotor. You'll have to check in your town to find out who does this type work.(Just be careful when taking your car to shops because a lot of time what they are telling you is not always true)!RamMan
