Question -
my engine in my 1998 Dodge Dakota truck (2.5L/5 speed magnum) is clacking or a snapping sound...but it doesnt do it all the time, just like when I gunning it up a hill...or passing other cars.  What could be causing this?
Answer -
Dennis,
What octane gas are you running?
Im running the normal octane that the owners manual calls for 89, I believe.
How long have you had the truck?
I've had the truck 5 years now, bought it used back in 2000.
Does it sound like the valves are clattering when accelerating uphill or passing cars?
It does sound like that, I never heard valves clatter though.

Answer
Dennis,
Here is what the manual says about pinging or knocking sounds during acceleration or uphill........
1.Incorrect fuel grade.
2.Fault in the fuel or electrical systems.
3.Improper spark plugs.Check the plug type against the VECI label located in the engine compartment. Also check the plugs and wires for damage.
4.Faulty emissions system.
5.Vacuum leak.
The reason i was asking what grade fuel you were running is because a high compression engine will clatter if you are not using the right grade.I would recommend buying a Haynes repair manual from a parts store and do some troubleshooting.Let me know if i can be of more help.
