Ford: ford focus steering, nissan pulsar, steering wheels

Question
Hi There,
I just bought a 2004 Ford focus which is very good n quite happy with that. I am just wondering if there is anything wrong with the power steering. Its bit harder to steer than my other car Nissan pulsar. the problem is I cannot turn the wheel to the left or right by one hand.

How tough are the ford focus power steering? Is this a problem? Do I need to go to see mechanic?

Thanks for your help

Answer
Hello

If the car is actually equipped with power steering, it should easily turn left or right with minimal effort (2 fingers).

If it doesn't, I would pinch the high pressure l\hose with engine running. Usin vise grips, you should get a similar noise as you would from holding most steering wheels in full lock position.

If you don't, it would indicate that your pump is not producing enough pressure or the belt is slipping.

You should be able to see a belt slip problem.

Otherwise, check the front end suspension and visible alignment and tire pressures as these can all effect steering effort.

If all above seems good and steering is still difficult, i suspect a bent steering rack.

try to get someone with a similar car (maybe a mall shopping lot) to let you try their steering  to confirm
