Question
My car Overheats after its warmed up if I go from 40 to 55 it begins to get hot. it cools slightly but gets hot again. This winter the heat stopped working and my father gave it anti freeze and it started working however when he was down there he said the hose was lose and he fixed that however now ti smells like anti freeze when its warm. My father just changed the thermostat. However it did no good.

Answer
Hello,

While these engines can have head gasket issues, I need to get clear.

What do you mean by "overheat" ?

Does it actually boil over? do you have to add coolant regularly?

If it is just the guage rising higher than normal, we need to see if the engine is getting hotter, or just sending you the wrong info.

The guage rising and falling would suggest  the opening and closing of the thermostat. This will continue to open and close until the entire coolant is above the rating of the thermostat.  It does this to quickly raise the engine temperature to optimum operating temperature.

With cooling system full, get the engine to the high temp mark you are experiencing. Usually 2000 RPM for 2 minutes will do it.

Do you get hot air from the heater?

Turn heater off and see if radiator fan comes on.

Does It?

Using a scan tool?

If not, find a method to get the temperature of the metal thermostat housing, That should be close enough for this.

Get back to me with all the info and I will advise the next step.
